P.B.S Book Week - Reading Pathway

This week is book week challenge, different classes around our school are doing different activities based on Book Week. In Learning Space 2 our activities was to make a DLO showing our favourite book from our childhood to Now. My favourite book now is Amulet, it has interesting story, lots of mysteries and adventures.  

Venn Diagram - Our Favourite Books

Today I have created a Venn Diagram with Marieta. This Venn diagram shows two different books which is Amulet 1 and Scooby Doo and in the middle shows that comparison the books have in common. I realised that they both are a fiction story.

Today Nyjah and I have made a DLO on three types of books we would never read... Although we had to give a explanation of why we wouldn't. In the end we decided on Science fiction, Drama and cook books.

Collaborative Comprehension - Battle of the Somme

Today for reading we are learning about the Battle of the Somme. For this activity I work with Mataio, we work collaboratively and help each other. I learnt that the war last 4 months and I learnt that the word catastrophic means hectic or crazy. The Battle of the Somme, it was a battle between British and German but it started between French and German. French soldier order British army to help them beat German soldiers, but at the first day of the war many young British soldier die. The most challenging question for me was 'Explain in your own words what the British plan was?' because I need to make my own opinion.

Reading - Poem (Did I Miss Anything?)

Did I Miss Anything?

Question frequently asked by students after missing a class

Nothing. When we realised you weren’t here

we sat with our hands folded on our desks

in silence, for the full two hours

Everything. I gave an exam worth

40 percent of the grade for this term

and assigned some reading due today

on which I’m about to hand out a quiz

worth 50 percent

Nothing. None of the content of this course

has value or meaning

any activities we undertake as a class

For reading we read the poem about Did I Miss Anything? I learnt that this poem has written by Tom Wayman. I had fun doing this activity because question were quite hard and I need to illustrate the verse. For this learning I worked with Miki. 

Reading - Labelling

Today for reading Ponui and my group work together to label some pages of the book called the Man made World. We choose the last page to label because there are lots of labels at the back and there is a Glossary. The book is about maps and information about country's. Also there are lots of illustration like a globe and there is also a map of the whole world at the back of the page.

Hippo Sandal

Today for reading our group read a story about Horseshoes. After we finished reading and answered the question we move of to the making DLO. For this activity I need to make the DLO that shows labeled Hipposandals. One of the thing that I learnt was Hippo is the Latin for Horse.

Reading - Labelling

Today for reading we've been learning how to label different pages of the book. My group is Pakatoa and we worked with Ponui, we use teamwork so that we can find as many as possible in one page and label them. It was easy to find the labels because we worked collaboratively and we communicate to each other.

Features of a Visual Text

Today for reading we are learning different labels and finding them at the book.  There are some labels that is not in the page of the book, like Bullet Point, Side Bar and Glossary. We tried our best to make the picture look better but it is hard to take a picture with our chrome book, but you can still read the labels. The arrow(Label) that has given to me is Illustration it is easy to find, it is just a drawing of something.

5 Facts About Ancient Rome

For Reading we are reading about Ancient Rome, there is lots of facts about ancient Rome that is so Interesting like, they use urine to wash clothes. It is so fun learning about Ancient Rome and the history of it. 

Eeling Procedure

Today for reading we are reading a story about eeling. There's was family that loves to go eeling every night. They use different strategies to catch eels. I list them 1-5  so it is easy to see their strategies.

Facts About Vikings

Today for reading we learned about Vikings, Vikings is from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. I learned lots of things about Viking like, Viking's boat is made out of wood and there is  Figurehead in the front of the wood. They row hard so they can Attack quickly, They also wear a helmet made of leather.

Facts About Geese

This week for reading I have made a DLO about geese. I used my smart searching skills to find 5 facts about geese and a labelled Diagram. I have learnt a lot from doing this. I learnt that Geese can live almost everywhere. They like parks, fields, and grassy areas near Waters.

How To Survive A Cow Attack

Today for reading I created a DLO to show how to survive a cow attack. To get the information I need, I read an article called A Shortcut. Link.

Maori Legend Heneheauone

The Maori legend, it is the story of how the first women made name Hineheauone. We made this in story board me and josh work hard and we use teamwork to do this. The story is so interesting and its really cool to know a story about  the first women live in earth. 

Making Connection

Today we read an article about snowboarding. We learn that in 1985 snowboarding became popular. We also did a Text to Text, Text to World and Text to Self. We watch someone that is surfing, surfing is similar to snowboarding.

Read Theory Graph

Today we looked at our graph for read theory. I started at Grade 3 and now I'm in Grade 4 to 5. My highest grade that I achieved is  grade 7, I worked really hard to achieve my highest grade. This year I'm going to focus to get a higher grade and knowledge points. Getting a high grade is really hard, you need to be focused reading the story and answering the questions.

Skiing on Sewege

Today for reading, our group read a article about skiing on sewage. Recycling the water will help the environment. Sewage or toilet water can be used to make snow. There are a lot of people that didn't agree about the recycling of the toilet water. Many people think the yellow snow was from someone's pee, but its not it is the rust from the tubes that made the artificial snow.

Making Connections

Today we learn about snow and hail. It is really cool seeing a snow and hail. I learn how  hail and snow are made. I saw a snow at Vancouver Canada with my cousin and my parents.

Read theory

Today we did read theory and its so fun to do that.

Its a little bit hard but we learn a lot to read theory.

e.g. Helps our reading, helps our vocabulary words, grows our knowledge in reading

I got 71% on the test because its hard to remember the passage. Read theory is very helpful to my reading.
